Intranet

An INTRANET is a network internal to an organisation. It uses the same technologies as the Internet.
The aim is to achieve better results that can be attained using traditional data access and transfer methods.

An intranet is a grouping of internet services, eg. a web server, internal to a local network (accessible only from workstations on a local network or a collection of clearly defined networks, invisible to the outside world). It uses client-server internet standards (via TCP/IP protocols), such as eg. internet navigators (client based on HTTP protocols) and web servers (HTTP protocol), to construct an information system internal to an organisation or company.

INTRANET vs INTERNET

An intranet is an organisation's network, whereas the Internet is a worldwide network. An intranet has access to the Internet, but not vice versa.
